Born in Northeim, Germany in 1925, Robert Ernst Marx is a German-American fine artist with works created through oil paintings, drawings, bronze casted sculptures utilizing a lost wax process, and midcentury etchings. Marx's focus is in oil painting and figurative work.

Marx was educated by the University of Illinois for his BFA and his MFA, 1951 and 1953, respectively. He has been represented academically  by Ithaca College, Drake University, Kansas State University, and many more academic institutions. He is honored as a Fulbright lecturer at Delhi University, New Delhi, India, in the year 1985, Distinguished Professor 1989 in the SUNY system, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1989 for the SUNY system.   Marx's work is featured in international collections including, but not limited to:

Marx resided in Rochester, NY, with his wife, Francie until his death. He is has been represented by Main Street Arts Gallery in Clifton Springs, NY since 2014, and was previously represented by Davidson Galleries in Seattle, WA, starting in 1970.

As part of an exhibit to students of the Harley Schools, Rochester, NY,  over three weeks Robert Ernst Marx worked on an oil painting called Ship of Fools as a demonstration to students of the creative process in 1989.
